Building a Business in the Age of Social Media

Building a Business in the Age of Social Media

I’ve never been very active on social media. Personally, I posted 1-2x/year on Instagram. However, now I’ve entered the portal and there’s no turning back. At least not for my business’s sake.

After these past few months, I officially understand the power of social media.

When you’re building a consumer-facing company, leveraging social media is a must. Many Millennial and Gen Z consumers will go to a company's Instagram page before visiting its website.

Depending on your product and target audience, ignoring social media can be detrimental to your business in this day and age.

I had heard of the “building in public” approach. To be honest, it was never something I wanted to do. I didn’t even know how to make Instagram Reels (short-form videos) 6 months ago.

But when push came to shove, I cared more about successfully launching my business than what people thought of me, regardless of how cringy my initial videos might be.

The only way to get better at creating videos is to create more videos. So, I started to put in the reps.

Instead of telling myself I don’t have time to ideate, shoot, edit, and post a video every day, I changed my priorities.

As of now, email and social media are how I reach my target audience. In order to have a successful launch, I need to increase my subscribers and followers.

So far, the most effective way to do that is by increasing brand awareness via social media.

This month, my goal is to post 1 Instagram Reel per day Monday through Friday. That’s 5 new videos a week for the month of January 😲

I’m sharing this goal with you to hold myself accountable!

It’s going to be time intensive. It’s going to be difficult. But I believe it’s going to be worth it.

It’s one week in and I can already tell you that the activity on my Instagram page has gone up significantly.

I knew starting a business would push me out of my comfort zone. But wow, did that happen fast!

Wish me luck on my (occasionally still cringy) videos this month!
